According to foreign media reports, the U.S. environmental group Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that not only sales receipt but printed receipt from ATM contains toxic chemical substance bisphenol A. This group claimed that they collected receipts from Wal-Mart, McDonald’s, KFC, chain

Researchers pulled out 36 receipts and figured out that 40% of them contained excessive bisphenol A. In addition, the content of bisphenol A in receipts is 250 or even 1000 times higher than that of goods like canned milk powder containing it. Among them, the content

of bisphenol A in receipts of McDonald’s, KFC, Wal-Mart, Safety and other enterprise receipts is the highest.

However, EWG also noted that the amount of bisphenol A contained in receipts of different branches of the same chain enterprise makes great difference. For example, the content of bisphenol A in receipts of a KFC in Maryland is as high as 10.62 mg while that of another branch KFC in Iowa is only 0.0001mg.

The report pointed out that it is caused by different thermal paper used by di

fferent branches. Some manufacturers are dedicated to produce thermal paper without bisphenol A.

Bisphenol A, a kind of environmental hoemone, can be commonly found in plastic products. The epoxy resin inside food containers is made of bisphenol A which may pebetrate into food and absorbed by human body.   About 10 years after the said incident, the boy

developed a pain like that of Appendicitis and got his appendix removed by a private surgeon.  After that a couple  of months of  the appendectomy, there appeared to be a big nodular swelling of lymph node on the right side of the neck  of the patient.  On detailed investigations, doctors found carcinoma of right kidney as the cause.  Nephrectomy was done at a medical college hospital, after which the swelling subsided but ultrasound report showed infiltration in the surrounding visceral lymph nodes and the liver.

 

  The patient started having low-grade fever some time after nephrectomy, which could not subside even by antipyretics prescribed by the concerned doctors.  The other day, temperature rose to 104 degrees Fahrenheit.  The patient also felt cramping pain in the belly.  The attendant consulted doctors of alternative system of medicine who though brought down the temperature and pain but the patient meanwhile developed severe Jaundice, Ascites, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.  For tapping of ascetic fluid, the patient got admitted in the hospital quite often.  Meanwhile, the patient became very weak and remained in moribund condition for some days and then died.

In a separate trial done recently involving 2000 women from nine countries, it was found that a single dose of radiation during surgery was just as effective for breast cancer patients as receiving weeks of radiation.

This new technique, called Targeted Intraoperative Radiotherapy, could save patients many weeks of post-operation radiotherapy that can include 20 or 30 visits to hospital. It also reduces damage to organs such as the heart, lung and oesophagus from radiation exposure. Although this new technique was applied to women with a similar type of breast cancer, researchers were excited by the findings.

Taste

Traditionally described qualities of taste are sourness, sweetness, bitterness, and saltiness. Some others may exist, notably Umami, (Japanese translation “delicious”). This is most elicited by glutamate, an enhancer of taste commercially available as monosodium glutamate or MSG. In 1908, Ikeda from Japan, recognized it as the tasting chemical component of the brown algae soup Kombu. This Umami concept was developed by Chaudhari and Roper from the University of Miami in 1998. Loosely implying a “meaty” taste, this concept is still not widely accepted.
