Our bodies don’t get cancer; our bodies make cancer. That is we have made it ourselves. How did we accomplish that you may ask? Simply by not respecting the laws of Mother Nature. I found the article by Dr. Michael Erdmann in the February issue of The Lancet Oncology very interesting.  He discussed findings from recent trials on two anti-CTLA-4 agents, ipilimumab and tremelimumab.  They are both immunomodulating antibodies targeting CTLA-4.  While phase 2 study of ipilimumab has shown some clinical responses with best overall response rate of 11.1%, phase 3 study of tremelimumab was terminated due

to lack of superiority compared to chemotherapy (dacarbazine or temozololomide).  Note that response rate of ipilimumab is comparable to chemotherapy.  However, it is important that prolonged disease stabilization in the selected subset of responsive patients is different.  The author explained activation of immune system by blocking CTLA-4 is a double-edged sword.  Ipilimumab has been associated with dose-dependent immune-related adverse events like enterocolitis and hypophysitis with irre

versible disability.

Researchers’ next challenge is to prove ipilimumab’s superiority to chemo in phase 3 trials and hopefully they can identify biomarkers to identify or predict melanoma patients whom will respond to these CTLA-4 agents.

One interesting study is called, “Asbestos Fibres in Beverages and Drinking Water” – Nature 232, 332 – 333 (30 July 1971); by H. M. CUNNINGHAM & R. PONTEFRACT Food and Drug Directorate, Department of Health and Welfare, Ottawa.

Here is an excerpt:  “THE hazards of inhaling asbestos fibres1−4, the high incidence of gastrointestinal cancer1,2,5−7 and abdominal n

eoplasms3,8,9 among asbestos workers and the fact that asbestos fibres may penetrate the mucosa of the stomach and the intestine of animals10,11 are known and so it is important to study the distribution of asbestos fibres in the environment. Asbestos fibres have already been found in beer12, and the occurrence of fibres 0.5 nm in length and 0.01 nm in diameter suggests that such material may find its way through filtering systems into city drinking water supplies, and this we have been able to

confirm.”

Another interesting study is called, “Prevention of asbestos-induced cell death in rat lung fibroblasts and alveolar macrophages by scavengers of active oxygen species” by
Shatos, M.A. ; Doherty, J.M. ; Marsh, J.P.; and Mossman, B.T.  – Publication Date 1987 Oct 01 Resource Relation Journal Name: Environ. Res.; (United States); Journal Volume: 44:1 – Research Org Univ. of Vermont College of Medicine, Burlington.  Here is an excerpt: ” The possible modulation of asbestos-related cell death using antioxidants in both target and effector cells of asbestosis was investigated. After exposure to crocidolite asbestos at a range of concentrations (2.5-25 ..mu..gcm/sup 2/ dish), the viability of a normal rat lung fibroblast line and freshly isolated alveolar macrophages (AM) was determined. In comparison to fibroblasts, AM were more resistant to the cytotoxic effects of asbestos. Cytotoxic concentrations of asbestos then were added to both cell types in combination with the antioxidants, superoxide dismutase (SOD), a scavenger of superoxide (O/sub 2//sup -./), and catalase, an enzyme scavenging H/sub 2/O/sub 2/. Dimethylthiourea (DMTU), a scavenger of the hydroxyl radical (OH/sup ./) and deferoxamine, an iron chelator, also were evaluated in similar studies. Results showed significant dosage-dependent reduction of asbestos-associated cell death with all agents. In contrast, asbestos-induced toxicity was not ameliorated after addition of chemically inactivated SOD and catalase or bovine serum albumin. Results above suggest asbestos-induced cell damage is mediated by active oxygen species. In this regard, the iron associated with the fiber andor its interaction with cell membranes might be critical in deriving a modified Haber-Weiss (Fenton-type) reaction resulting in production of OH/sup ./.”

In 1950, Dr. Haskell applied negative ions to patients of hypertension. Another study done by the University of Frankfurt involved a “Cancer Team” led by Dr. Kusturica that further studied the physical effects of negative ions on c

ancer cells.Different types of cancer cells were transfused into the bodies of rats. In order to have a base of comparison, one groups of rats were put into a negative environment each day while the other group remained untouched.

As a result, the rats in the negative ion environment lived, on average for 59 days, while the rats that were untouched lived no longer than 34 days.The rats from the experimental team live 25 days longer; some even lived as long as 80 days! The experiment’s results

confirm the effectiveness of negative ions in treating cancer.

Another research team conduct a similar experiment. Cancer cells were transfused into small mice. The research team then compared the mice in a negative ion environment to ones the did not have negatives ions in order to examine the proliferation of the cancer cells.

Consequently, the cancer cells  inside the bodies of those mice that were not in a negative ion environment increased 58 mg per day, while the cancer cells inside

the bodies of those with negative ions increased less than 27 mg. It was even more amazing to find out that in about 1 third of these rats, the cancer cells decreased significantly and eventually disappeared completely!

Electronic cigarettes have all the advantages of better health, cheaper, odorless, stainless and flameless making it the best way to quit smoking.

Mesothelioma is one of the leading causes of cancer among veterans in the United States. The disease is most prevalent in veterans of the era of the 40s through to the 60s when the use of asbestos was wide spread in the construction of military equipment. Mesothelioma is a cancer that forms as a direct result of continuous exposure to asbestos particles. Upon inhalation, the asbestos particles find their way into the deep annals of the lungs where they become logged amongst the tissue a

nd cells. Here they remain ant interact with antibodies released by the body as a direct result of the irritation caused by the asbestos particles and transform the surrounding cells into cancerous cells. This process continues until the entire lining of the lung becomes damaged. Unfortunately, mesothelioma is not easily diagnosed resulting in many veterans being unaware of their condition until the disease becomes irreversible.

Between the 1930 through to the 1970s, the use of asbestos was pr

evalent in many military constructions. As a result, military veterans from all sections of the armed forces who served in World War 2, Korean War and Vietnam now exhibit after effects of asbestos exposure. The main exposure came from equipment such ships, submarines and airplane in which asbestos was used for insulation purposes.

Navy
US Naval veterans have one of the highest rates of mesothelioma among US veterans. Most of these individuals served in shipyards where they were involved in the

construction of ships and submarines for use in the fleet. These vessels were laced with asbestos from end to end due its excellent heat resistance qualities. The asbestos was placed in walls, floors, valve gaskets and around boilers. However, due the lack of knowledge available at the time about the dangers of asbestos exposure, these individuals worked fearlessly to get their orders out.

Army
Although members of the army did not use utilize ships or submarines during their operations, this did not save them from asbestos exposure. Asbestos was a cheap material that could be used in many applications. As a result, asbestos was used to construct sleeping barracks in many locations overseas. It provided good insulation in cold countries, however as the wars progressed, many of these building aged or were damaged by enemy fire causing the asbestos particles to be released into the environment. These side effects still exist for those individuals who still live in the war-ravished areas who still use some of these buildings for living purposes.

Marines
It is a tradition for marines to work closely with the navy as most of their deployment depends on the assistance of the navy. As a result, these marines become exposed to the same contaminated conditions on asbestos-laced vessels. In addition, many of the buildings used the marines while on land were also built from asbestos products.

Air Force
Asbestos is a relatively light material that provides good insulation that was perfect at the time for use in airplane construction. As a result of being enclosed in these small cockpits for extended periods during wars and training, world war 2, Korean and Vietnam veteran pilots have gained the unfortunate post of being second only to navy veterans with the highest rate of mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure
