Have you ever known this fact about popcorn?? | Nutrition

October 31st, 2010 annie No comments

When you snack popcorn while watching TV, you probably have a deep belief that this snack will make you gain more calories and more weight.

The fact about popcorn, which most of us are not aware of, is that popcorn is a Healthy Snack. Snacking on popcorn is like eating a piece of Whole Wheat Bread in terms of the heanth benefit as both of them are excellent source of fibers.

Fibers are amazingly healthy, and have to be present in everyone’s daily diet because they are very

rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, they also reduce blood sugar level and give you a satiety sensation leading you to eat less.

Additionally, fibers are necessary to facilitate the passage of the fecal mass through the intestine, thus it prevents constipation and reduce colon cancer incidence by reducing the time of exposure of the intestinal cells to the fecal mass.

However, we have to complete this nutritive value of the popcorn by avoid preparing it with saturated fat

like butter, rather we should use a minimum amount of a healthy vegetable oil like tropical oils with a minimum amount of salt or we can instead sprinkle thyme or rosemary which are more healthy and can add more flavor.

To make a very healthy snack that your kids love, add mozzarella or parmesan cheese after the popcorn is done while it’s hot.

snacking on popcorn is much healthier for your children than snacking on chips, cookies, pretzels, etc as they are uploaded with sugar, salt and sat

Dorsopathy Caused by Oxygen Deprivation | Diseases

October 31st, 2010 annie No comments

Dorsopathy caused by oxygen deprivation is one of the most common forms of chronic pain syndromes in the back, neck and limbs.  There are many purely anatomical reasons why oxygen deprivation may occur, but these are rarely involved in most back ache conditions.  Instead, the underlying root source of this purposeful restriction of circulation, and therefore, oxygenation, is the mindbody process enacted through the autonomic system.

Dorsopathy is a general term for symptoms whic

dorsopathy caused by oxygen deprivation diseases

h occur in the rear side of the body.  Oxygen deprivation describes a condition when organic tissues do not receive enough of the necessary supply of oxygen in order to function properly.  The technical name for this condition is called ischemia, which usually strikes back pain sufferers as a regional disorder affecting all the living tissues in a specific area of the body.  While every cell in the body needs oxygen to live, some are particularly susceptible to deprivation and will demonstrat

The theory of oxygen deprivation back pain has been championed for decades by the world renowned Dr. John E. Sarno, who practices medicine at the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at The NYU Medical Center in New York City.  Dr. Sarno is the author of many books on the subject and whose teachings have slowly worked their way deep into the traditional medical system and have now been accepted by a great number of phy

sicians and complementary therapists.  Living in New York myself, I was lucky enough to be treated by Dr. Sarno for my own horrible back pain, which changed the course of my life forever…

Oxygen deprivation back pain is thought to exist due to a purposeful constriction of the smallest of blood vessels in a regional area of the body.  This reduction in blood flow will almost immediately affect nerve fibers, explaining why so many patients have a constant battle with various neurological symptoms, including tingling, numbness and weakness, particular the subjective variety.  Continued reduced circulation will begin to affect muscles and other soft tissues, as well, most commonly resulting in spasm, cramping and even antalgia is some patients.  This is documented on many diagnostic imaging reports as a loss of spinal curvature, particularly in the lumbar and cervical regions, in patients with severe back and neck pain.

Research scientists have studied back pain due to ischemia and found the processes involved to be strikingly similar to the oxygen deprivation found in distance runners.  Furthermore, reduced levels of oxygenation have been found in the cells of patients with fibromyalgia and other similar mindbody disorders which seem to strike without warning and defy all manner of medical treatments.  Why this purposeful reduction in oxygenation occurs is open to speculation.  Dr. Sarno teaches that the process occurs due to the subconscious mind using the symptoms as a defense mechanism against repressed or suppressed subconscious and unconscious issues.  Other doctors who study the oxygen deprivation process cite other causes and contributors ranging from anger to repressed stress to unfulfilled desires to particular personality types.  Personally, I see the validity of all these causative and contributory possibilities, as well as others, since the human being is certainly a combination of mind and body components.  Remember, it is scientific fact that the mind and body influence each other constantly and each can enact or contribute to health or dysfunction in the other…

I always suggest that patients with any type of chronic pain, which has not responded well to appropriate treatment, research ischemia for themselves.  There is literally tons of information available on the subject and the more you read, the better you will understand how the theory of oxygen deprivation makes far more sense than the often antiquated and unenlightened structural model of pain embraced by the laughable Cartesian philosophy.

Diabetes Consultations for Personalised Care Planning – how to make them effective | Diseases

October 31st, 2010 annie No comments

Once diagnosed, Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong condition that requires people with it to have regular consultations with health professionals for medical check ups and discussions about the management of their condition. Increasingly, these consultations are being seen as opportunities to assess and improve confidence in self-management of the person living with diabetes, rather than the traditional approach of the health professional to give instructions. This is due to the rec

ognition that active involvement of people with diabetes (and other long-term conditions) in decision-making about their health leads to greater satisfaction and better outcomes.

Personalised Care Planning is a UK health policy that accepts and promotes the partnership approach to decisions about diabetes management, recognising that the day to day decisions that people make are more likely to be adhered to than decisions made by a health professional in the small amount of time they are in co

ntact with them. This article looks at the skills needed by both health professionals and people with diabetes in order to make the partnership approach to consultations a reality.

Skills for health professionals

The main skills required are asking open questions and then listening carefully and attentively to the answers. Ideally, the first question should be ‘what is your biggest concern about living with your diabetes at the moment?’ This open question ensures that the person with diab

etes has the chance to voice their thoughts first and can set their priorities for discussion, rather than waiting to have their say when time may be short after the health professional has addressed their own agenda. Listening actively to the answer includes putting aside papers and computer screens and facing the person in a comfortable yet attentive posture, eg leaning forward slightly with arms unfolded. Knowing that they have the full attention of the health professional will make the person much more able to speak freely.

Once the person’s main concerns have been elicited in this way, the health professional may describe their own concerns about the person’s diabetes, enabling agreement between both parties about the content of the consultation. This process can be made quicker and easier if the person with diabetes has had access to any routine tests or investigation results prior to the consultation and has had time to reflect upon them. This key aspect of personalised care planning enables greater equality between the health professional and the person with diabetes and makes consultations very focussed on the person with diabetes’ priorities.

Helping people with diabetes set goals and plan what action they will take are also key skills for the health professional. With these key elements, a consultation will be more likely to result in a shared understanding of what will happen as a result. Goals need to be set by the person with diabetes, because their behaviour in relation to diabetes will depend on their goals. People are less likely to act if they perceive they are fulfilling the goals of others, including those of their health professionals. The skill of goal setting is to ask the person what they would like to achieve and by when – terminology might include ‘ambitions’, ‘achievements’ or ‘aims’ instead of ‘goals’. Helping people to clarify what they want and documenting it for reference are central to goal setting. Action planning is about creating actions for both health professional and person with diabetes and involves specifying exactly what each will do in the shorter term, towards achieving the person’s goal. Checking that actions decided upon are SMART – that is, Specific, Measureable, Actions, Realistic, Timescales – is also a key skill which ensures that what is decided upon really will take place.

Skills for people with diabetes

Traditionally, the role of the ‘patient’ was to listen passively and to try and carry out the instructions of the health professional. In personalised care planning, the ‘patient’ becomes a partner, indeed the dominant partner, since the actions and decisions of the person with diabetes will determine the outcomes of diabetes care much more than those of the health professional. The skills needed to work in collaboration include being able to reflect in advance on the test and investigation results received, to make a record of these and to voice their thought

Orthotics & Back Pain | Othere Health Articles

October 31st, 2010 annie No comments

The feet are the foundation for our bodies.  All of our weight is placed on them as we stand and transferred through them as we move. If our feet are functioning correctly, our foundation is as it should be.  However, if our feet do not function correctly, we can experience discomfort and pain not only in our feet, but also throughout the other joints in our body, including our back.

Consider for a moment that all of our joints must be correctly aligned to function properly.  Furthe

r consider that if one or more joints are not aligned, undue pressure is placed on the other joints as they try to compensate for the misaligned adjacent joints.

When the foot arch is properly supported, the feet tend to function smoothly without any discomfort.  Properly functioning means the arch smoothly transfers weight from the heel to the forefoot as we step or run.  To do this, the foot must be balanced, stabilized and aligned.

Over-pronation is an inward rolling of the foot at the

ankle. Some pronation is natural but when the rotation of the foot is excessive, the over-pronation causes an imbalance, destabilization and misalignment of the foot which in turn causes other joints to move out of alignment.

The over-pronation causes excessive rotation of the foot which pressures the ankle, lower leg, knee, thighbone, hip and finally the back all to excessively rotate.  This rotation forces a drop of the hip on one side which then pressures the back to move out of positional

alignment.

The result is pain.  The pain can be felt in the feet, ankles, knees, hip, and/or back. The pain can be felt in one joint or in all the joints.  Often, only one area becomes painful as that one area absorbs the brunt of the pressure forcing the poor alignment.  The back being the area with the most connecting bones frequently becomes the most inflamed and painful area.

However, when the feet are properly aligned, stabilized and balanced, the amount of rotation is reduced to a normal level and with that, stress on the joints and back is reduced.

Superfeet Premium Insoles can provide the support and motion control necessary to insure proper foot arch function.  These Orthotic Insoles help to restore and maintain a strong, healthy foundation.

For some people, the body will take some time to adapt to the Orthotic Insoles just as the Orthotic Insoles take some time to adapt to the unique shape of our feet.  But given a chance, the Orthotic Insoles will realign the foot arch which will stabilize all the other joints – ankles, knees, hip and back.

it is important to realize the condition and pain did not happen overnight and restoring the body to the correct positioning will also not likely happen overnight.  Healing will take time and patience.

Superfeet Orthotics are proven to help improve the lower back and continue to work up through the mid-back and the neck. Proper alignment is essential to good health and this begins with our foundation – our feet.

In short, the foot bone is connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone is connected to the knee bone, the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone is connected to the hip bone, the hip bone is connected to the back bone….

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome 101 | Disabilities

October 31st, 2010 annie No comments

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

In the center of the wrist, there is a space called the carpal tunnel where a major nerve (the median nerve) and nine tendons pass from the forearm into the hand. A very strong ligament forms a roof over the tunnel. When there is swelling in the carpal tunnel, pressure is put on the median nerve, which supplies most of the fingers and thumb with feeling and movement. When pressure becomes great enough to compress the nerve, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome may occ

Causes and Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The most common causes of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are swelling of the lining of a tendon, repetitive use of hands involving activities like grasping, squeezing or clipping. Other causes include fluid retention during pregnancy, rheumatoid arthritis and bone dislocations or fractures. Symptoms such as pain, numbness and tingling may result, either by itself or in combination on either or both hands. They may also be noticeable while performing

Treatments for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

We suggest the following non-surgical treatment to relieve pressure on the median nerve:

e area.

Wearing wrist splints at night may relieve the symptoms and accommodate a better night’s rest.

Anti-inflammatory medication taken orally or injected into the carpal tunnel may help reduce the swelling and relieve symptoms.

Surgical Treatments

When symptoms are severe or do not improve with non-surgical treatments, surgery may be elected to enlarge the carpal tunnel by cutting (releasing) the ligament to allow more room for the median nerve. Endoscopic surgery is now available and this form of surgery shortened the recovery period as compared to open surgery. While individual results vary, most patients return to normal daily activities within days after endoscopic surgery and return to work earlier than those who undergo the open surgery. The Endoscopic surgery procedure is performed using a device called the Carpal Tunnel Release System. It allows the release of the carpal ligament through a small incision at the base of the wrist. Carpal tunnel release has been proven to be a highly successful surgery with excellent results for most patients.
